General Notes:
Considerable difficulty has been experienced in determining the ancestors of Edward Aske, shown in Burke's Peerages as the father of Robert, 1st Baronet of Aughton (born 29 December 1872). Anecdotal evidence is that Edward came from Hull and was a haberdasher; and that he had a brother, Thomas, whose descendants had attended Edward's descendant's wedding, and were familiar with the names of Edwards's descendants in some detail. Searches of the earlier mentioned IGI, FreeBMD and the 1881 and 1901 census, reveal no trace of any Edward Aske. But change the spelling to Ask and that opens up an avenue that is very credible. Bulmer's 1892 East Yorkshire Hull Trades and Professions shows 'Ask Edwd., house furnisher' at 101-103 Porter Street, Hull. And another listing shows 'Ask Edward, shirtmaker and house furnisher, 101-8 Porter Street'. There is no trace of any person called Aske. The 1881 UK census records Margaret Ask (born Driffield 1848/49), wife of a draper and head of household at 101 & 103 Porter Street, Hull. As well as a draper's assistant, there is listed 'Robert W Ask, a scholar', born Hull 1872/73. Further, in the same census, a 35 year old draper, Edward Ask who was born in Bubwith in 1845/46 was a 'visitor' at Lillings Ambo, in the parish of Sheriff Hutton near Easingwold, some 60 miles from Hull. None of these three people were listed in the 1901 census. Of the four Robert Aske listed in that census, none shared the same year or place of birth as Robert W Ask. Searches of the IGI reveal that no Edward Aske was ever known in Yorkshire, but Edward Ask was christened in Bubwith, Yorkshire on 12 July 1846. His parents were shown as Robert Ask and Rebecca (sic). They had another son, Thomas, christened at Bubwith on 10 December 1843. In the latter part of the 19th century the keeping of records regarding births, deaths and marriages became a function of government rather than the church. In the registrars records there is a record of Edward Ask being born in September 1846 in the Howden district of Yorkshire, and a man of that name marrying Margaret Pettinger (the same Christian name as the householder at 101 Porter street, Hull) in Thorganby on 4 April 1872. There is a registrars record of the birth of Robert William Ask in Hull being registered in March 1873 (three months after the Burkes Peerages date of birth), this being the only record of a Robert W in the registrar's records. And in June 1909 a Robert William Aske is recorded as marrying Edith Annie Cockerline in Hull. Researching the Edward Ask name leads to Thomas Ask (and his father Thomas), both of whom had been listed in the Coultous tree, but as Aske. I fully recognise that deductions from the absence of a record are always fraught. But on this occasion I feel that, on the balance of probabilities, Edward Aske (and Thomas) were born Ask in the style of their father Robert Ask, and that this branch of the family emanated from Bubwith, and the Askes of Aughton; Sir Robert reverted to Aske before he married.
Edward married Margaret Pettinger on 4 Apr 1872 in Thorganby, Yorkshire.
