General Notes:
He was a regular soldier with 18th Hussars, reputedly an excellent horseman.
The 1911 census reveals that he was at Tidworh, Hampshire at the time.

1910 - Northern Cavalry Brigade HQ established at Scarborough.
16 Aug 1914 - Regiment (23 officers, 2 WO, 44 Sergeants, 6 troopers, and 621 men and 700 horses) transited by rail from Tidworth and landed Boulogne to form part of 2 Cavalry Brigade under Brigadier General H. de B. de Lisle CB, part of the Cavalry Division of the BEF (British Expeditionary Force)
17 Aug - By rail to Maubeuge area 12 miles south of Mons for training.
21 Aug -To Thulin in Mons area during the build up to the first BEF engagement of the war.
23/24 Aug 1914 - Holding the line behind Mons to Valenciennes road. Bitter fighting - 9 dead and 58 taken prisoner. Very heavy loss of horses.
He was one of the 58 and was taken to Hameln Camp Lazaret which was subject of enquiry after the war regarding the lack of medical attention. He was repatriated after the war to Scarborough.

Benjamin married Dorothy Pobgee, daughter of William Pobgee and Unknown, in 1913 in Watford. (Dorothy Pobgee was born on 23 Jan 1893 in Kensington, London and died on 17 May 1967 in Scarborough.)
